An Open DataSpace

Public access to the DataSpace is coming soon!

When we launched the CAVD DataSpace in December 2015, DataSpace membership included active and former members of the CAVD. In the fall of 2017, we invited members from HIV vaccine networks beyond the CAVD to join the DataSpace. Since then, we've been reaching out to networks to identify target members who'd benefit the most from accessing the DataSpace, specifically, investigators, junior investigators, staff scientists, and post docs involved in concept development, study design, and ancillary studies. Our current list of invited networks includes:

  • HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN)
  • Military HIV Research Program (MHRP)
  • International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI)
  • NIH Vaccine Research Center (VRC)
  • Center for HIV-AIDS Vaccine Immunology (CHAVI)
  • European AIDS Vaccine Initiative (EAVI).

The DataSpace community will soon be inviting members beyond those affiliated with the CAVD and the invited networks.

Under this expanded membership, all members, including the public, will have access to the complete set of HIV vaccine study pages in the DataSpace, and to data that have been designated by contributing networks for public access.

DataSpace Staged Collaboration Levels

The DataSpace security model allows the collaboration level, or permissions, for data access to be set
for each study. This provides the flexibility to keep access to study data restricted until it is ready to be
moved to the full collaboration level, or at the full collaboration level before it is ready to be publicly
available.

DataSpace has three collaboration levels for data access: (1) public, (2) full collaboration, and (3) restricted collaboration. Each contributing network designates collaboration levels for its study data.

Public – Data at this level are publicly available. No restrictions.

Full collaboration – Data designated for full collaboration is available to DataSpace members affiliated
with one or more of the contributing or invited networks. These data will not be available to the public.

Restricted collaboration – The restricted collaboration level is intended for data that are not yet ready
for full collaboration or public access and constitute “private” data that might be used by specific
laboratories or investigators for sharing data within their immediate research group. These data are
typically restricted to members affiliated with a specific network or study team, allowing the network
investigators access for review prior to releasing it to the DataSpace community at full collaboration or
public levels.

Data Sharing and Use Agreements

The current terms of use agreement for the CAVD DataSpace references the CAVD Data and Material
Sharing Agreement
, including the Data & Materials Sharing Principles, Master CAVD Confidential
Disclosure Agreement, and Master CAVD Material Transfer Agreement. To see the full terms of use, go to the Sign In page on the DataSpace Home page.

As we begin to expand the membership and incorporate data from other contributing networks, we will
review the existing data use agreement with a small group of members nominated by each of the
contributing/invited networks to serve as a data governance advisory committee. The committee will
also work together, and with their networks, to establish expectations and community norms around
how data can be used, how individual network publications policies are incorporated, and requirements for citations in manuscripts.

If you are interested in participating in the data governance advisory committee, please contact [email protected].
